JB, this line of Epson carts uses a sophisticated valve that prevents leaks or drying out. In fact, because it is proprietary to Epson, third party carts may not have it (and so beware...). As others have said, I too, just stick the half used cart in a ziplock for the sake of not pushing my luck. Officially you are not required to do this. Swapping works fine and is safe to do with Epson inks and carts.
