David,
Yes, you are right. You have to actually hold and see the prints to 
tell - and even use a magnifier.

I guess it's a fairly subjective opinion whether digital files 
printed on OHP material are comparable to (or as-good-as) regular 
negatives - both contact printed.

To you they are ?
