Re: Hahnemühle packaging disaster, cross posted

A related Hahnemühle paper story:

A box of 50 13x19 Hahnemühle 188gsm PhotoRag I purchased a few
months
ago had two serious problems. One was paper handling damage, the
other was machine roller damage.

The handling damage was evident immediately on opening the box. The
wad of 50 sheets had a kink running through the middle of the stack.
This is the sort of thing that's easy to do if you handle paper
with
one hand rather than with two. There was no damage to the box so the
fault had occurred in the factory prior to packing.

The machine roller damage was only visible with light reflected at a
very oblique angle. It wasn't visible when looking square on.
It
was like a slightly polished finish on the matt surface running in
two parallel bands, each about an inch or so wide and about 6 inches
apart running the length of each and every sheet. The fault is
symptomatic of a roller being jammed, probably on a chopping machine
in the factory. Instead of the roller turning as the paper (whilst
still on the roll before being cut) feeds over it, it drags over the
jammed roller thereby damaging the surface.

My paper dealer replaced the box. But at first he tried to tell me
that I'd kinked it – no. Once he finally acknowledged the
roller
damage did he agree. I wonder whether he sent it back to
Hahnemühle?

I worked in Photographic Paper manufacturing industry for 12 years
(until 1986). This sort of damage is not unknown!

But, the paper is so good I still use it!!!
