All "free" software eventually moves in this direction, as companies discover (or admit) that they cannot stay in business without charging money for things--often lots of money. Also, companies get more greedy with time, so prices invariably rise. FreeBSD is still free, but like all true versions of UNIX, it works better as a server than as a pseudo-Windows desktop.
