You need a calibrator that is capable of measuring the actual response of
the CRT, and compensate for the loss of shadow detail by stretching out the
low end of the scale. I'm not aware of any software-only systems that let
you do this, but haven't looked very hard. If you're serious about your
profession or hobby, a package with a true colorimeter is a very worthwhile
investment. Of all the things that you want to be properly calibrated, the
monitor is the most important.
