You didn't say anything about the make or age of your monitor. Generally, a monitor over about 3 years old will not be very good for use where accurate tone and color a required. I don't know about the different makes, since there are many monitors that are identical except for the case and label. Before you spend lots of money on calibration, evaluate the age and make of your monitor. If you need a new one, buy it before you buy the calibration equipment. Unless, of course, your new monitor would have all of that included.

You need a calibrator that is capable of measuring the actual response of
the CRT, and compensate for the loss of shadow detail by stretching out the
low end of the scale. I'm not aware of any software-only systems that let
you do this, but haven't looked very hard. If you're serious about your
profession or hobby, a package with a true colorimeter is a very worthwhile
investment. Of all the things that you want to be properly calibrated, the
monitor is the most important.
