Daniel,

I'm scanning in 16 bit greyscale, so don't know if that makes a  
difference or not.  Here is an example from a type 55 negative, scanned  
at 1200 dpi (select the large image size for better detail):

The large image was reduced in size from the original scan, which was  
5400x4179 pixels.
