I get banding in the light sky areas of my 6x7 transparencies scanned
with the Epson 3200. I had the same problem, but even worse, with my
previous CanoScan 9900f, and returned it for that reason.

Does it by any chance look something like this?

Daniel, it looks a bit like that, but no actual lines, just slight undulations (banding ) in certain sky areas. Not thru the entire image.

I'm just wondering if it's a limitation of flatbed scanners in general
since I had the same problem with both the 9900 and the 3200...

Daniel,

I've recently started scanning Polaroid type 55 negs using an Epson
3200 with Vuescan and have not seen the banding you described.

The example was from the 9900 that I returned, with the 3200 it's less
pronounced. Here's one I just made from the 3200:

Converted to grayscale and increased contrast:

Original:

You'll see that the BW version has vertical banding in the sky, while
it's not easily visible in the original.

Rotating the transparency 90 degrees on a scanner makes the problem even
less visible.

Daniel,

I'm scanning in 16 bit greyscale, so don't know if that makes a
difference or not. Here is an example from a type 55 negative, scanned
at 1200 dpi (select the large image size for better detail):
http://www.schophoto.com/gallery/photo.php?photo=553&lang=eng
The large image was reduced in size from the original scan, which was
5400x4179 pixels.

They are not newton's rings, I know what they look like, and this is definitely banding. Also, keep in mind that this is a 20K scanner, not a consumer item.

Daniel,

I've never seen banding using my 3200 on color and b/w pan negs. Are they
are consistent or random bands? Do you hear uneven noise while scanning?
Try scanning plain white paper and then checking it in PS Threshold.
