I'm not sure why the "barrier-paper" (RC) prints get a higher dmax but with a "Photo K" that is less dense on matte paper. The surfaces of these glossy papers are just a different animal. Perhaps it's the inherent smoothness -- or lack there of -- that allows a different coating type or the characteristics that give rise to these differences.
