Steve, Yes, the Lightness channel...then, salt to taste. :>) IOW, vary the opacity to your liking. If preview is checked, you'll see the image lighten/darken somewhat similar to moving the center slider in Levels. As for including it or not, I simply picked this up from a tutorial on www.imagingrevue.com.
