Well, the ink drinking tendencies do give me something to consider. I'm pretty fond of Atlex as a consumables supplier but they don't show the grey cartridge on their site and their prices for the other HP cartridges aren't a bunch better than what HP offers them for. I'm still seriously considering the 7660 as a printer to dedicate to BW. B&H list it at ~ USD $150. When I'm delirious I consider getting an Epson 1280 to dedicate to BW but I'd really like to get out of the 'science fair' mode for printing BW. It would be excellent if Epson could come up with 'out-of-box' BW in their next generation photo printers but that seems a fond hope.
