David... The emulsion and base are extremely delicate. (Only distantly related to Kodak's tough Estar base and hardener-impregnated emulsions.) Fixer is aggressive and can damage and stain as well as lead to early exteriorization even if hypo clearing agent is used. I vaguely remember Polaroid started putting a warning in the instructions to not use fixer too, several years ago.
