Polaroid type 55 negs

2004-01-26 by Roger Smith

Hi everyone,

Is anyone using Polaroid type 55 Pos/Neg type film and scanning for B&W
prints? I am thinking about shooting type 55 with my 4X5 and scanning with
the Epson 3200. This seems like a great combination as I do not have a
darkroom available to process 4X5 film. Any info and/or tips from the group
would be most welcome!

Horde that film, rumor says it may be discontinued soon.

I've often used the Polaroid 55 negs. They scan well and
produce outstanding prints. Just be sure to clear all the gunk off
with a hypo solution as streaks will show up very prominently on
scans. And careful not to scratch the wet negs...

have any source for the rumor? They've recently raised all their
prices... maybe if the market will bear it they will keep the stuff
around for a while... it was suspicious how cheaply I got a brand new
545i holder for lately though.

Roger-

It scans beautifully. It is an excellent option. I don't have any
special tricks; it is very straight forward.

Roger,

Type 55 scans beautifully. I've found that I get the best scans using Vuescan, but I'm using an Epson 1680 Pro. This combo lends itself to a quite easy workflow for digital B&W...IMO.

One idea you may want to consider...I read about an article recently, written by Mac Holbert (of Nash Editions fame), where he is using Scanner Mounting Fluid with his Epson 3200. According to Mac, "fluid" mounting directly on the glass contributes to better, cleaner scans. Haven't tried it myself, yet...I just got all the supplies together. If interested in pursuing this technique yourself, SMF 2001 (mounting fluid) is available from www.aztek.com. I'll warn ya now, it ain't cheap! A 32 oz. bottle is $50US + shipping. And, it falls under the Hazardous Material category so shipping ain't cheap, either.

You may want to check out www.georgedewolfe.com, too. I think George is (or was) primarily using Type 55 nowadays for digital B&W output.

Inside unnameable source (she still has a job there) says many films
will be discontinued soon as part of an effort to save the company. It
has been in chapter (?) for some time now and it's stock is worthless.
They are getting killed by digital. They missed the boat. When was the
last time someone shooting digital shot a Polaroid first? Looks like
the only ones who may still be using their films are some police
departments and artists. Sad but true; if not enough customers buy
their films, why make them. They are trying to make digital printing
papers, etc. now to keep their heads above water. Perhaps a buyout from
some other struggling company will fit the menu.

Roger,

I am new to 4x5, but that is exactly what I've been doing (using a
Tachihara 4x5, Polaroid type 55, scanning negs with Epson 3200). The
negatives are beautiful and scan very well (I've been exposing at iso
32).

Everyone figures it will go away, it's just a matter of how long and
which films go first... but a few more good years with Type 55 would
be nice:) Seems like Type 55 would be one of the last to go
though... maybe only because of my own enthuiasm. I guess cops want
color and artists want b&w... sad, sad, sad...

Re: [Digital BW] Polaroid type 55 negs

2004-01-26 by Ken Schuster

I use Type 665, which is the medium format equivalent. It produces excellent
negs for darkroom prints as well as scans, with a long toe (good shadow detail),
and less contrast than Plus-X, Tri-X, etc. I forget the "official" mixing ratio
for sodium sulfite to water, but a quarter teaspoon to a pint of water works for
me. Before putting it in the solution, remove as much of the paper around the
neg as possible. Then submerge in the solution in a tray, tank and hanger, or
just hold a corner with your fingers and dunk in a glass, etc. Gently agitate
and the black mask will come off after 15-30 seconds at room temperature. The
emulsion is very fragile, so be careful. After the sodium sulfite solution, I
rinse it in running water for 5-10 seconds, then put it in a hardener bath (a
few drops of hardener to a pint of water) with agitation for about 30-60
seconds... then rinse about 10 seconds, and then Photo Flo before hanging to
dry. Do not use Fixer!

Maybe Fuji will take over the market. They seem to be more intelligent than
others. For instance they remain comitted to film.

Ken,

What's the reason for your point about not using fixer when processing type
55 film?

Mark,

How serious is that rumour ? I'm using 665 from time to time and
I really would like to continue that. Fuji seems eager to
continue film manufacturing, in contrast with Kodak and Polaroid
it has confirmed continuing development of film. They could make
an instant negative film like they make more instant film. Maybe
even a faster version.

I scan it wet mounted on a separate glass plate in focus above
the glass bed of the 3200. Vuescan two passes + longer exposure.

I've found that the negatives are underexposed at 32. I expose somewhere
between 20 and 25. Polaroid 55 is great stuff, and it scans wonderfully on the
Epson 3200. Lay the negatives, emulsion-side down, right on the glass, and
lay the Epson 4x5 film carrier on top with the image centered in the hole for
the 4x5 negative (the Polaroid 55 negs don't fit in my carrier but the carrier
does a good job of holding the Polaroid 55 neg flat against the glass).

Can you freeze Polaroid 55 film for long shelf life? Or do the chemicals
not like that sort of thing? I keep a couple of boxes in my fridge, but maybe
I need to put more boxes into deep storage.

I'm pretty sure you can't freeze it - I think it just kills it... and
polaroid film doesn't keep that well. I think type 55 does a bit better than
colour, but not that much.

BTW, only last year Polaroid was testing an 8x10 version of type 55, but
decided not to produce it in the end....

That would have been cool

Now, anyone for "chocolate" polaroids? I keep meaning to try that out.

Ernst,

What thickness glass do you place on top of the 3200's glass bed?

Where's the longer exposure setting in Vuescan?

Thanks!

No, polaroid chemicals dry out way before the film goes bad. Even
refrigeration is probably a bad idea because it it so dry in there.

...also don't know why you think they didn't make the 8x10" stuff,
b&h has 3 varieties in stock right now (2 b&w and one color):

what's a "chocalate polaroid?"

Anyone know how to get around the problem that type 55 does not fit in
the 3200's 4x5 holder? I don't have the ability to build a custom
holder. Are you trimming the negative, mounting on the glass, etc?

Re: [Digital BW] Polaroid type 55 negs

the film is already fixed and shouldn't be fixed again... don't know
what it would do. Some people like a hardener, but I don't bother...
I handle them as carefully as any other negative once they are dry
and haven't had any problems. (I don't think it was even designed to
be hardened...)

sure you do... some black matte board and an exacto is all it takes.
make a two peice hinged frame (with the proper cutout on the top)...
just about the right height too.

I have done the "chocolate" Polaroid thing with 8x10. It works OK but I
did not spend the needed testing time and the very costly investment to
see if I could improve the results.

They don't make an 8x10 version of type 55 pos/neg - where you get a nice
big 8x10 polaroid negative full of detail - which is what we are talking
about

>
> what's a "chocalate polaroid?"

Mix and match - colour pod from one type of film and the actual film from
another type - gives you a rich sort of chocolate brown coloured print. But
in 8x10 it means you have to buy a pack of each and throw the unused parts
of each away. In 20x24 Polaroid actually will sell the packs separately as
it's quite popular in that format - you expose a 809 negative and process in
a 804 pod and receptor - in 8x10 you have to buy a pack of each.

(not a very good example)

I think Joyce Tenneson uses it a lot

Re: [Digital BW] Scanning Polaroid type 55 negs in 3200

2004-01-27 by D. Hill

John,

I've just placed the negative emulsion side down on
the glass with good results when scanning type 55.

Very sharp images.

RE: [Digital BW] Polaroid type 55 negs

2004-01-27 by Ken Carney

55PN is indeed an excellent film, for so long as it is around. Sad thing
about Polaroid. I used a lot of 35mm Polapan instant b&w slide film --
beautiful stuff, now gone. PN55 has a fairly short shelf life, so stocking
up won't help much. But use it while you can. Generally speaking, when the
positive is "too light" the negative will be about right. If the positive
looks OK, the neg is thin, i.e., you get an exposure meter as a bonus
("Polameter"). Processing is easy. Just strip as much of the paper and
crap away from the neg as you can, rinse, then soak in an 18% solution of
sodium sulfite for at least 20 minutes (that's about two tablespoons of
sodium sulfite or Kodak Hypo-clear per liter). You can leave the negs in
the sulfite solution overnight and it won't hurt them. Then rinse as usual,
Photo-flow and hang to dry. It scans really well.

In the field, you can get a Polaroid tank to fill with sodium sulfite and
process on the spot. If you find one that doesn't leak, let me know.
Incidentally, you don't need a darkroom to process film. Calumet makes
daylight 4x5 tanks and a film tent to load it (and the film holders). Once
you have loaded the exposed film in the tank, all else is done in room
light. Another option is to get Kodak ready-load 4x5 (limited to Tmax 100
and 400 I think) and have a pro lab develop the negs. Hope this helps.

Regards,

David... The emulsion and base are extremely delicate. (Only distantly related
to Kodak's tough Estar base and hardener-impregnated emulsions.) Fixer is
aggressive and can damage and stain as well as lead to early exteriorization
even if hypo clearing agent is used. I vaguely remember Polaroid started putting
a warning in the instructions to not use fixer too, several years ago. (I'd
check, but I don't have any where I am at the moment.)

Ken,

What's the reason for your point about not using fixer when processing type
55 film?

The Polaroid developing agent doesn't recuperate, nor does the pod that contains
it.

What the heck is "exteriorization?" That was supposed to be "DEteriorization."
So much for spel check. ;-) Sorry.

Ernst,

What thickness glass do you place on top of the 3200's glass bed?

Where's the longer exposure setting in Vuescan?

Thanks!

John V.

John,

First you have to find the right focus for your 3200. Norman
Koren has some information on that. There is a longer message on
the subject somewhere in the archives that I have written. Make a
mask of a plastic sheet and some black paper that resembles the
3200 carriers on the outside but with the appropriate size window
for the film you are using. The thickness of that mask should be
near the focus height. There's a problem there as some 3200's
have their best focus on or near the glassbed. I use a separate
normal float glass sheet of 2 mm thick and a size smaller than
the glassbed so it can be rotated. Liquid mount the film with an
extra sheet of transparent polyester on the glass that itself is
lying on a thick soft piece of paper to even out the pressure
applied. When mounted remove the dust on both sides and put the
film + glass sandwich on the mask that's lying on the scanner
bed. The glass should be turned over with the film "hanging" on
the underside. That way the heat of the lamp isn't interfering
and there's only the scanner glass + polyester foil between the
film and the scanhead.

Long exposure is under the input tab. It will result in two
passes, one normal and one I believe taking 6x longer. From the
last only the extra information is used to get better information
ftom the dark negative parts. With the 2 passes I add this means
that process is done twice. I could only do this with the
negative wetmounted and turned over so underneath the glass as
the lamp heat expands the film or displaces it otherwise.

Ernst
