Colorburst RIP

Colorburst RIP

2004-01-26 by sandersm@aol.com

I went back through the archives to see if anyone besides Robbe was using the
Colorbust RIP and couldn't find any references to it. Does anyone on the
list have any experience with it? Any thoughts, observations? I notice that
its most recent revision for Macs, v2.2, came with release notes that cited
improved grayscale printing as a feature of the revision.

I'm interested too, because buying ImagePrint for both my printers winds up
costing as much as Colorburst.

Sanders,

why not download the free demo from

http://www.colorburstrip.com/

and give it a test drive.

I really haven't tested enough to make final pronouncements but my initial finds are
as follows:

- the grayscale support means better cmyk profiles for neutral prints from grayscale
files. I prefer partitioned workflows (where inks are assigned start/stop positions
along the gray scale) , but could live with 6- or 7-channel multichannel files if that's
what it took. This isn't how CBurst works, and I haven't looked further to see how a
custom grayscale profile could be made.

- I printed a gray scale on a 2200 using the profiles that ship with the current release,
and while the gray hue was fine, there was unacceptable banding (some kind of
herringbone, not the kind that indicates bad nozzles). Yet, the printer had good clean
nozzle checks, the heads were recently aligned and the problem did not recurr when I
printed either through the Epson driver or OPM.
That to me was a deal-breaker. i didn't pursue tests any further but I hope others try
the demo so we can compare notes.

- I also briefly checked color printing and found shadows not open enough and a
funny dither (looking like fine vertical lines) that I wasn't crazy about. But I know this
part is completely subjective and a new profile could deal with shadow detail better.

-Installing it on a G3 iBook (640 MB RAM) it was way slow for postscript. But then, the
min requirements call for a G4. As an RGB or grayscale printer, speeds were decent
for a G3/ jaguar.

It would be nice to see a grayscale-capable, full scale RIP (like StudioPrint) for OS X.
I wonder what others may have to say about this release (2.2) of Colorburst.

I have recently down loaded the trial version of the color burst rip and
similar problems with banding on grayscale images on the 2200. The grayscale
images printed on the 9600 were some of the best I have ever seen. Color on
both machines exhibited banding in the shadows until I set the printer to
its highest rez ( 8 passes ) it then went away and looked very good. I
couldn't get rid of the banding for gray scale on the 2200 but I am very
impressed with the performance of the 9600.

Steve,

thanks for sharing that. I wonder why the 2200 would have these problems
when the large machine works fine.
Didn't the 8-pass slow things down too much?

Re: Colorburst RIP

2004-01-26 by Roy Harrington

The big difference between the Pro printers and the 2200 is that the
Pro printers do all the microweave (anti-banding code) in the printer
so you get Epson's version of that code. In the desktop printers the
driver in the computer does micorweave so every driver/RIP will be doing it
differently.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Colorburst RIP

2004-01-26 by Robbe Gibson

Hi,
I have been testing Colorburst with a 7600UC for the last 10 days.
Grayscale images look good. Everything prints much faster. The
difficulty I'm having is with sheet paper feed. After printing the image
and removing the sheet, one inserts a new sheet of paper. When the paper
loads, it then continues through the printer as if there's more image to
print. If I set the paper size to 8"x10" or 10.1" and use the 'center
image' choice, there's no 'double print' problem except the image isn't
really centered because the paper size is wrong. I've also tried the
'offset image top and side' choice. That produces a perfectly centered
image but the 'double print' problem is still there. Joshua at
Colorburst said I'm the first person he's heard of that uses a 7600 with
sheet paper.(?)

I have no feed problems using Colorburst with roll paper.

I have no feed problems using roll or sheet paper with the Epson driver.

Anybody have any ideas?

Robbe Gibson

You may be exceeding some maximum allowable bottom margin, or need to
go in and see if that can be set somewhere. So even though it's done
with the image it's looking for more paper. StudioPrint does that too
if everything isn't set right. Or it's just a bug.

"When I do this it doesn't work".
Typical tech support answer-
"Well why would you want to do that that?"
Sounds like an old Roney Dangerfield joke and not that funny any more.
Of course people use sheets in all these printers.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Colorburst RIP

2004-01-26 by Robbe Gibson

Since Colorburst says to use 10" setting for an 11" piece of paper on
the 2200, I'm tempted to go with the bug concept. On the other hand, as
easy as Epson has made it to load sheet paper -er, align sheet paper, I
can see why one would not want to use it.

Anyway, it works pretty well except for that one issue. Oh, and don't
try to cancel a print half way. You end up having to do a reset from the
printer control panel.

Thanks for your input.

You may be exceeding some maximum allowable bottom margin, or need to
go in and see if that can be set somewhere. So even though it's done
with the image it's looking for more paper. StudioPrint does that too
if everything isn't set right. Or it's just a bug.

"Well why would you want to do that that?"
Sounds like an old Roney Dangerfield joke and not that funny any more.
Of course people use sheets in all these printers.

IP will do that, too. You have to watch the margin widths, image size, etc. closely with sheet goods.

Aha! thanks for that Roy. I guess then, they shouldn't claim to support the 2200
unless the microweaving is in place.
