Hydrocote vs Liquitex or Other

2004-02-09 by Tom Andrews

Hi,

I am looking for a spray coating for matte papers that will give maximum protection
and minimum change to the fine matte look. I am currently printing on Moab
Entrada Natural, a very sweet paper. Premier Art Print Shield satisfies the minimum
change criteria; it gives almost no change in appearance. However, the protection it
offers for glassless framing seems inadequate. I have tried Liquitex mixed 2/3 gloss
and 1/3 matte. Not bad, but still mostly kills the matte feel. Regular lamination that
I have seen is worse and always looks way too plastic for my taste. I haven't tried
hydrocote and am wondering how anyone with experience with this coating would
evaluate it relative to stuff like Liquitex. Or can offer any other suggestions for
coatings that would get me closer to my compromise. Many thanks!
