If you are converting to greyscale using just the mode change in PS, you
might try looking at other ways of converting a colour image to greyscale.

I use the LAB method -

convert image to LAB mode

look at just the lightness/luminance channel - make adjustments as neccesary

convert to greyscale mode from that channel  (say yes to dialogue box that
asks if you want to discard the other two channels) ‹ tweak more if you want

At that point I use Roark's curves and instructions to print.

The straight conversion to greyscale in PS leaves a lot to be desired!
