This is indeed a problem, or was. When Epson printers go through a cleaning cycle, which is automatic after a certain number of print "hits" they purge both the black and the color ink. One solution is to use this Utility -- http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml You can freeze the auto cleaning and do it when you think fit. Black only cleaning is available. This will mean no color ink wasted at all. You might want to do a nozzle check every now and then and if there are any gaps go through a full cleaning cycle. I am using it on my 2200. It seems to have bugs, but basically it works.
