There are tens of photography galleries that feature photographers in
Chelsea -- the area on the west side of Manhattan from 14th Street to 28th
Street, or thereabouts.  You should also make a point of visiting the
International Center for Photography (www.icp.org) in midtown Manhattan.
Soho Photo, a collective gallery and home of the well known annual Crappy
Camera competition (www.sohophoto.org) is also an interesting stop.

I'm going to NY City in about a week and would welcome any suggestions as to
good B&W galleries, exhibitions, or other related sites I should see.  I
won't have a car, so I expect we'll mostly stay within walking distance of
public transportation.
