I've got a 3000 which is the same mechanically as the 1520, which I've just repaired. One thing comes to mind and that is that the head might have an ink build-up on the head making it collect drops while the prints are going through, then dropping them at random. You might want to try a small amount of windex on te cleaning pads to see if it helps.
