First UT7 experiences

First UT7 experiences

2004-05-13 by edrudolpho

Hello Paul... I received a set of UT7 inks today and tried them out this evening,
making several prints on various papers: EEM, HPR, and a few sheets of Hawk
Mountain that I'd gotten in a sample pack (Osprey Smooth and Osprey Natural). The
results are good. For all of the prints except one I used the slider method. For the
last print, on HPR, I downloaded curves from your website. (It seems that the Sepa,
Light Sepia and Dark Sepia curves for EEM are missing - broken links.) I want to
thank you for the great deal of work you've done on this project. You've made it
easy, even for a neophyte like me, to begin to produce good digital B&W prints.

Ed,

Thanks for letting me know about the broken links. I think I've fixed the
problem now.

I'm glad the system is working for you.

I encourage people using either the UT2 or UT7 inksets to try the easy,
no-curves method of printing first. Frankly, most of my routine prints are
on EEM from grayscale files with no curves and no sliders used. For a set
of cards I'm doing, I'm even using 720 dpi with High Speed checked. The
results are just fine. The system should produce good B&W prints with the
driver in close to its default settings. (Paper type set to "Matte
Paper-Heavyweight" for UT2 and "Enhanced Matte" for UT7, and a resolution of
at least 720 gives noticeably better quality than the default "Plain paper"
and 360 dpi.)

Let me know if there are any other errors.

I think I'll make a simplified instruction sheet. The web information
sheets are mostly just my notes that I make while testing. So, they are not
very concise.

Good luck with the system.

I'd like to try the new UT7 for 2200 printer. I am confused by the
different eboni ink. I already have ARC-T0348-K, is it the same as
UT7-T0348-UTK?

Thanks for info.

There is only one Eboni ink, as far as I know. However, I'm not familiar
with all of the MIS inks and serial numbers, including the one you noted.
So, check with MIS.

Smudge at start of prints -- 1520

2004-05-13 by Arthur Fink

Ug! At the start of my prints is a dark smudge ... starts at the beginning
of the pepr, and continues for about 1". It doesn't go the full width ...
looks like ink on a roller or some such. But what could be causing
it? It's only on one portion of the paper, and doesn't last more than a inch.

Smudge at start of prints -- 1520

2004-05-13 by Arthur Fink

Surprises!

I turned off the printer for a while, and did some 4x6 prints with no
problem at all.

Then I printed an 11x17. I has dark drippy lines at the left side of the
print (as it came out of the printer), that are 1/2 - 1" long. They are
spaced about 1/4" apart. Some are thick (almost 1/8") and others are much
thinner. It looks like ink was dripping.

Any idea what this can be ... and how to cure it?

By the way, all prints were on Hannemuhle 308, with MIS UT-FS ink.

Smudge at start of prints -- 1520

2004-05-13 by Arthur Fink

One more bit of explanation, that really surprizes me.

The 11x17 print starts out okay, for about the first 5 inches. Then the
drips start.

So, the print, viewed from the top of the printer, looks like this

 --------------
====
---
====
====
***
****
----
====
===

 --------------

Before, I was printing with about 7/12 margin on the left. The drips
stayed to the right of that.

Now, with about a 1 1/8" margin the drips go further left than the margin.

Are you using a CFS/CIS? If so your bottles may be too high. If you
just recently replaced a cartridge, its vent system maybe faulty.

Yes ... just replaced the color cartridge -- MIS UT-FS.

What would/could be wrong with the vent. And why do I only see the problem
on 11" wide prints, and only after they have bee printing for a while?

I've got a 3000 which is the same mechanically as the 1520, which I've just
repaired.

One thing comes to mind and that is that the head might have an ink build-up
on the head making it collect drops while the prints are going through, then
dropping them at random.

You might want to try a small amount of windex on te cleaning pads to see if
it helps.

Re: [Digital BW] First UT7 experiences

2004-05-15 by byten2003

Hi Paul,

Let me start by thanking you for your work on the UT7 inkset for
2200. I am coaxing excellent color prints from the 2200. I am on a
quest to produce excellent b&w from the 2200. Getting the ut7 ink
carts to give me a good nozzle check took several cleanings, a
restart of the printer and a few pages of printing.
I have tried applying the curves you posted for eem in photoshop 7.
The carbon curve is the one I am most interested in. The curve
knocks the image way out when I load it under the curve adjustment.
The image is rendered barely visible on the monitor, and when it
prints it looks washed out. I am applying it to an image I have
converted to monochrome using the channel mixer. It is in 16 bit rgb
and has been since it left the cameras raw file.
Just wondering what I am doing wrong since you are getting good
results with it. When I print from ps7 with my windows computer I go
to print with preview, Print space profile is "Printer Color
Management". I then checked ICM in the color management in the epson
driver.

Thank you again for your diligence and assistance!

Charlie

In "Print with Preview" in Print Space set to "Same as Source"

In Epson driver turn off color management - "No Color Adjustment"

Thank you John,

It gives me the carbon look! I am so used to having to use profiles
or printer color management. I see now that Pauls curves *are* the
paper profile. I have profiled my monitor and I have custom
profiles from cathys profiles. I tried not applying the curves from
Paul, and using the custom profile for the paper in the same way I
do with color prints and it gives me what I see on the screen. Lots
of experimenting to do! I am loving the idea of getting beautiful
b&w prints which look the same without regard to the illumination
light color temperature!! This is great...

You are welcome! I had the same problem as you did and it took a while to figure it out -
so I knew right away what the problem was with your setup.

I have been printing little crops 3x3 inch to get it tuned a bit. I
just printed a couple 8x10's. It is a amazing how a paper profile I
had made with epson inks gives me a neutral print with the ut7
inkset. It has a very very slight warmth but looks like a dark room
print. I think I need two 2200's after all.
