I've scanned 4x5 HP5 on an Epson 2400 (currently around $130 refurbished direct from Epson)and find that it's up to the task of printing 12x16 with absolutely no problems. There is just so much detail in the negative that a mid range scanner will handle everything. LF negs are past the time to start considering "perfectly adequate" vs. "perfection" in the final print. It's pretty easy to pass the point of diminishing returns in print quality unless you're printing something absolutely huge.
