Flatbed scanner for 5x4 negatives - recommendations/experience

Flatbed scanner for 5x4 negatives - recommendations/experience

2004-05-18 by Mike Smith

I have been considering buying a flatbed scanner of good enough quality to
scan 5x4 negs as the front end of a digital workflow.

I presently scan 35mm in a Nikon Coolscan 4000 and am reasonably satisfied
with the results as input to my ConeTech Piezography/1160 system - photo rag
etc. But would appreciate the possible size/quality/versatility advantages
of large format for landscapes, architectural subjects etc.

I would be grateful to hear of any experience out there and of any good
experience with specific scanners in the prosumer class. I am Mac based G4
and OSX.

Hi Mike,

Other than having the 4x5's drum scanned, I think you might consider
the Epson 4870.

Check this group.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/epson4870/
There's a lot of good info there.

Cheers

I've scanned 4x5 HP5 on an Epson 2400 (currently around $130
refurbished direct from Epson)and find that it's up to the task of
printing 12x16 with absolutely no problems. There is just so much
detail in the negative that a mid range scanner will handle
everything. LF negs are past the time to start considering "perfectly
adequate" vs. "perfection" in the final print. It's pretty easy to
pass the point of diminishing returns in print quality unless you're
printing something absolutely huge.

Re: [Digital BW] Flatbed scanner for 5x4 negatives - recommendations/experience

2004-05-19 by Bill Morse

Hi Mark (and Mike)-

The Fujis do a good job of scanning transparencies, at more than enough
resolution to feed an 1160. The problem is noise.

Mike, look closely (both on screen @ 50-100% and at your prints with a
loupe) at smooth areas of approx. 25% and 75% density. Do you see any
irregularities of density that are not explained by grain? (Wow, this is
difficult to put in words, but I sure know it when I see it! :^)

For what you'll pay for a Fuji, you can get a good drum scanner with
software. If you're going to do the extra work involved with 4x5's, it
might be worth better scans than you'll get with a flat-bed. OTOH, if these
issues are not important to you, then you'll probably get more bang for your
buck with medium format film and scans.

Bill,
I have had two Fuji scanners and never had ANY problem with noise.
Perhaps it was some settings set incorrectly. I can direct you to my
Fuji tech rep if you need.

Re: [Digital BW] Flatbed scanner for 5x4 negatives - recommendations/experience

2004-05-19 by Bill Morse

Hi Mark-

I don't believe I said that you did have a problem with noise.

I also did not mean to single out the Fuji's in this regard- the problem of
noise can be seen with any CCD scanner. It's not a matter of scanner
settings, but how the scanner responds to light.

Again, as I pointed out in my original post, if this is not apparent in your
prints, then it's not an issue for you. I certainly don't believe that
everyone has to use the same processes to get excellent results!
