Hi:

You are converting the gray scale back to RGB, right.

Then you apply the curve, right.

All setting in PS/CS should be Adobe1998RGB, even in the adobe print 
preview - both program and printer.

Then in the epson driver, you select "photo paper", and under custom 
you select "no color management" and set you dpi and other settings 
the way you want.
