I think one of prejudices against concept art is that I used to do it. At one time I was heavily into John Cage. I wrote 'instruction' pieces for musicians, got grants to do it too, aleatoric pieces, graphic score pieces. And then I just stopped one day. I'd lost the abilty to construct harmonies, I had no craftmanship. I was doing what I was doing because I couldn't do anything else. I also felt that whilst it was 'clever' it had no substance. I think there is always a place for things that challenge the concept of 'what is art' and push people's understanding and boundaries, otherwise we get 'stuck' ( a photographer recently articulated this as 'if I have to look at yet another photo of ... (insert your own over- exposure topic here)'). But I think that the high art establishment is itself getting stuck. Julian - we should be having this discussion on the arts lists!
