Bronzing is primarily a problem on shiny papers in the black or near black areas. If you catch the light just right, you get a faint yellowish reflection. On Epson printers, it seems to be caused specifically by the black ink, because ImagePrint, which uses a higher proportion of black ink when making grays, produces prints with more bronzing than the Epson driver, which mixes more color inks. Your description would seem to match, although I hadn't seen it on matte papers before. I consider it a minor irritant since, if you put a print under glass, the normal reflections off the glass interfere with the viewing more than the bronzing does.
