RE: [Digital BW] Re: How do you "burn" corners of a print

2004-08-09 by Bill Cheadle

This is my first post, but I wanted to second Lea's described method of
dodging & burning. I use essentially the same technique, learned from George
Lepp rather than Scott Kelby. Mr. Lepp's workflow is to set the layer to
Overlay, and fill with neutral grey, then just switch between black & white
and set the opacity for the desired level. I also use a Wacom tablet, and
sometimes use more than one of these layers when appropriate.

A great technique for dodging and burning in PS is this (from Scott Kelby's
The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers):

create a new layer
change the mode of that layer from normal to soft light (this is on the
layers palette) adjust your opacity on the top deck (not on the layers
palette) to soften or strengthen the effect use the brush tool and the color
black to burn use the brush tool and the color white to dodge if you mess
up, delete the layer and start again consider two seperate layers, one for
dodging and one for burning

This is the only dodge burn method I use and I love it. To see the change
from the original, just turn the layer off and on.

Lea

Make a mask file using Lighting Effects and paste it into Quick Mask.
