Joe-
Given that an image file resides entirely in Ram, what determines the length
of time required to send it to the printer-is it processor, or disk speed,
or what? When I hit the print button, I seem to sit and wait a long time for
the image to spool out before I have PS back.
How do you measure processor temp?
C.

I considered the raid setup, but went with the scuzzys because they were
cheap and fast and I could have one dedicated 15,000 rpm drive for a PS and
Illustrator scratch disk. Also Henry, my hardware genius friend who built
the machine is a scuzzy afficianado so I gotta go with his opinion. This box
will take five drives. This continues to be an interesting thread. This box,
by the way has an intake venturi directed at the processor and it is running
from 98 degrees f to about 125-120 when I really sock some bad PS filters to
it. This thread continues to be interesting and educational, we should send
our friend in Israel a thank you note for kicking it off. And yes, I don't
want to send my wife into coronary occlusion with the price. I have a
downtown office and an office at home and spend 90% of my work time at home
listening to WCPE on the internet while I work. The board has a helluva
sound card and with all the resources, the machine still has with a little
Bach and Vivaldi running in the background. We built the machine in our
dining room and I forbade anyone but Henry and myself to lay hands on
anything in the room. I keep promising to clean it up. It still looks
something like Berlin in late 1945

Joe,
Not sure about the need for SCSI these days. A pair of 10,000 rpm WD
Raptors
(35 GB) running in a Raid0 config, which is standard on most high-end
motherboards these days, are quite nippy.
I have my system on this Raid0 array, and another pair of 250GB WD drives
for data and backups. Each of these has a small 10GB partition onto which
I
put the windows pagefile on one and the PS scratch disk on the other. At
least I did; I now have the scratch file in a separate partition on the
Raid0 system drive. As long as the pagefile is on another drive, this is
faster, I think. I put the printer's spoolfiles on the unused 10GB
partition
now.
Lots of cases will take four hard drives; you just need to make sure you
have adequate cooling. Coolermaster cases have two fans blowing directly
over the drives.
I gave up adding up the cost of my latest PC; it was frightening my wife!
Bob Frost.

I haven't put the final pencil to it yet. My guess is over $2500 and under
$3000. If you were to get a name machine with all those goodies it would
be
substantially higher. My strategy now is to stick with this box and every
two to three years upgrade guts as needed (or desired) to take advantage
of
new technology advances which might be beneficial.
