RE: [Digital BW] Re: Ideal Windows computer spec

2004-08-17 by Nunan, Mike

Hi Joe,

This is an interesting thread which has caused me to go off and refresh my
knowledge of Windows memory limitations. The one thing I did remember (at
least partly correctly) is that application processes are usually limited to a
maximum of 2GB of virtual memory space for their own memory allocations, with
another 2GB being reserved for system data structures associated with the
process. Obviously it's best if there's enough RAM to allow everything to
reside in physical memory, but what does it achieve to go all the way to 4GB?
I doubt Photoshop would use a whole 2GB of system data structures, so maybe
3GB might be the best compromise.

However, one thing I discovered is that in XP you can use a special "/3GB"
switch in the boot.ini file. This increases the application space to 3GB, but
only if the application has been tagged as knowing how to use it. I don't know
for sure whether CS has been tagged in this way but it should be possible to
find out from the header of the EXE file. If it has, then the full 4GB might
be worth it.

If you really want to go all-out, by using Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
Edition or Datacentre Edition, it's possible to support up to 32GB or 64GB of
physical memory, respectively. I don't know how much you have to pay for
machines that will take this much RAM, but I'd guess they're not cheap yet!
Each process still can't allocate more than 3GB of space, but you could have a
large RAM disk for the swap file.

If anyone is interested in the technical background to all this, here are a
couple of links:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx
http://www.usenews.org/group/comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage/message-184018.html

(Second one is a Usenet thread that covers the issues, but not without a big
bun-fight half way through!)

Best regards,

-= mike =-

For PS, a separate mechanical drive and a ton of RAM are probably more
important than processor speed. The ASUS board I have will support 4GB in
one GB increments. As soon as budget permits, I'll go to 3 GB and then to
the big 4.

I was about to suggest getting _more_ than 1GB of RAM, especially if
you're
working with MF scans at all. I'm scanning at only 24bit with Epson
3200's
at work (which is why I scan at 24 bit, since 48bit, 3200 dpi scans are
too
big for me to be dealing with at this point), and when I eventually get
these home and edit these on my home machine, the various edits take a
long
time. Even cropping can take several minutes. I am using 1GB of DDR 2700
RAM, on an Athlon 2700+. Scratch disk is a separate physical disk.
