Bob-

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will try them all today, and I am sure
that most will have an effect. I think having dual processors and a gig of
ram has lulled me into thinking I can be inattentive with my housekeeping.
Here are a few questions.

Do these issues apply to both Mac and PC? I am currently on a Mac, but after
Joe Dempsey's and your emails I might switch soon to PC.

My scratch disc is a 7200 external drive. Much of my problem may be that I
have been using external firewire drives for my tif files, so clearly PS has
a lot of slower disc stuff to do. Would it make a lot of difference to get
the image files onto the internal disc to work on it?

PS has much of my 1.2gigs, and these are usually 50 meg files? Why should
the disc matter?

or your pagefile, scratch file, and printerspool

Can I assume the printerspool is on the same drive that the app was
installed and should/can it be moved? Where is pagefile?

And finally, I looked for the "Northwood P4" but could not find it. Where
did you purchase?

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

It might be worth your looking at your printers Properties/Advanced
settings. Here you can tell it whether to spool a file or print direct to
the printer (slow), and whether to wait until the last page has been spooled

or start printing immediately. You should have spool and print immediately
checked.

You may be able to do other things on your computer before you can use PS
again, because PS is only using part of your RAM (whatever you set in
preferences), so while PS is doing its thing in its part of RAM, the other
part is available for other programs to use with any spare capacity that the

processor has.

After giving a print command, do you immediately regain use of photoshop?
This is not a facetious question---I am really curious to find out what is
going on. I am beginning to think that I have a turkey machine here.
