Paul, I feel like I'm somehow defecting when I use QTR after all the work you have put into the curves for the MIS inks I use. I have tried QTR and do find the very low values to be better separated than with the curves. I know nothing about revising curves, and though their capability may be able to do the same, so I can't at this time adjust the curves to perform as QTR does. As far as dmax goes, I use primarily only two papers; both by Epson, HWmatte and EEMate; so I don't have a way of comparing dmax to other papers. I have found that checking "black" ink in proofing that I can see the lower values and their closeness of tone to mark the black point more accurately. Then I uncheck "black ink" and see it as it will print on the paper proofed.
