Will QTR run on XP Home Edition or is the Professional version needed?

Evan,

I've been out of the loop for a while but just tried QTR on my XP Home, and
it works fine. It's slow and the dmax is low for the EEM neutral curve
supplied, but I'm going to try adjusting the ink load to see if that takes
care of the latter problem. (I tried Image Print and found it was very slow
also. I don't know if that is typical of third party RIPs or not.)

I too feel that it tool a long time to print an 8x10, but it is also
printing at 1440 with what seems like unidirectional, and on a 2200
that takes awhile.

RE: [Digital BW] QTR on XP Home Edition?

2004-08-26 by Paul Roark

Tom,

>When you say IP and QTR are 'slow', what symptoms are you talking about?

With QTR I've just printed the same test image (a test strip on a layer of
an 8x10) with both QTR (a grayscale file) and the Epson driver (RGB file,
curve applied, 1440, high speed off).  The Epson driver took 142 seconds;
QTR took 270 seconds.

At Anderson Ranch they have IP6 for their 9600. I was amazed at how long it
took to print one of my images. The staff there concurred that the program
printed much slower than the Epson driver. I don't have the program myself,
so I have not been able to quantify the difference.

So, I have limited observations, and there may be variables that I'm not
aware of, but it looks like the Epson driver might have an edge when it
comes to speed.

RE: [Digital BW] QTR on XP Home Edition?

2004-08-26 by Tom Baker

Paul -

I haven't printed anything on my 9600 with the Epson drivers in over a year. But, as I recall, IP is slower than the Epson drivers. Especially if one is printing at 2880. When I upgraded my computer, I did not see any difference in prints speeds, so I believe the differences must be in the bit streams being sent to the printer. IP's may be quite a bit more complex.

Re: [Digital BW] QTR on XP Home Edition?

2004-08-26 by Richard Sintchak

I'm running QTR on WinXP Home Edition with no problems. I too notice
it's a bit slower to print than the Epson driver but I figure the
extra time must be QTR removing all that metamerism. ;-)

Paul/Tom,

Back when I used QTR on my Mac (G4 - 450mhz) I found it to be about 50%, at least, slower than the Epson driver. If I remember correctly--been a couple of years--it was about 40 minutes to print ~A3 size! To be fair to QTR and Roy, I firmly believe the lack of speed was due to GIMP. Maybe the latest release of the GIMP drivers are faster...dunno...I use IP on Windoze, now.

When I upgraded my computer, I did not see any difference in prints speeds, so I believe the differences must be in the bit streams being sent to the printer. IP's may be quite a bit more complex.

Re: [Digital BW] QTR on XP Home Edition?

2004-08-27 by Carl Schofield

There is a "Fast" dither option that can significantly reduce printing
time without diminishing print quality. I don't know if this option is
available in the PC version.

Re: QTR on XP Home Edition?

2004-08-27 by Johnny Eades

Paul,
I feel like I'm somehow defecting when I use QTR after all the work
you have put into the curves for the MIS inks I use. I have tried
QTR and do find the very low values to be better separated than with
the curves. I know nothing about revising curves, and though their
capability may be able to do the same, so I can't at this time
adjust the curves to perform as QTR does. As far as dmax goes, I use
primarily only two papers; both by Epson, HWmatte and EEMate; so I
don't have a way of comparing dmax to other papers. I have found
that checking "black" ink in proofing that I can see the lower
values and their closeness of tone to mark the black point more
accurately. Then I uncheck "black ink" and see it as it will print
on the paper proofed.

Still your friend in Photography,

Johnny Eades

I hope the above snipping butchery doesn't obscure the issue- From my
limited PC experience, with StudioPrint, I don't think it is related
to 3rd party drivers/apps in general, it is quite fast. However,
depending on what you are asking QTR, or IP, to do, there could be
many reasons for the slower speed. You may have simply asked the Epson
driver to print, no icc conversions on the way, an easy dither without
resize, no rotating etc..
Since a RIP may be doing many things the Epson driver is not doing,
including in QTRs case all the value to ink levels assignments, speed
issiues might be hard to directly compare.
On the Mac, PressReady was always slower than the Epson driver, but it
was also doing much more work.

The way to separate the pieces here is to print to file and
separately spool the file to the printer, using the Epson driver and
QTR.

The time differences for creating the print file and then for
printing it will thus be separated.

correctly--been a couple of years--it was about 40 minutes to print
~A3 size! To be fair to QTR and Roy, I firmly believe the lack of
speed was due to GIMP. Maybe the latest release of the GIMP drivers
are faster...dunno...I use IP on Windoze, now.

over a year. But, as I recall, IP is slower than the Epson
drivers. Especially if one is printing at 2880. When I upgraded my
computer, I did not see any difference in prints speeds, so I
believe the differences must be in the bit streams being sent to the
printer. IP's may be quite a bit more complex.
