If you are using the Epson drive you can use either for black only.   
However I use 2880 for black only with the Epson drivers on both my Mac 
ad my PC (XP).  As I recall Clayton Jones has

For QTR, you must use 1440/720.  2880 will flood the page with ink 
(MAC).  With QTR for Windows, the batch file specifies the appropriate 
1440/720 setting.
