It's still all moot in the context of installing Windows XP and updating it without being "attacked" by a worm. This is how this started. The question was how to install XP and get the updates without being completely open to the world. Blocking outgoing connections is irrelevant in this case because you are installing a new OS from scratch. Most, if not all routers come with all [incoming] ports blocked by default. You may have an argument with regards to wireless gateways. Those are indeed a nightmare but it is a bit beyond the scope of the question. g
