What alt process will you use? If it is pt/pd you will probably be better
off with high-res imagesetter negs, if you can still find a prepress that
has that level of imagesetter and will accommodate you. If it is a less
demanding process, the inkjet neg will probably work fine. If it is pt/pd
you will likely find that the simplest approach is just taking an in-camera
8x10 neg and developing for the process, e.g., Rollo pyro. I have also seen
beautiful 20x24" pd prints made from 6x7cm negs enlarged to 20x24" negs in
the darkroom (www.davidmichaelkennedy.com (the original website). He uses
pure palladium and double coats. Time-consuming, but great and far better
than any inkjet neg. Also checkout www.tommillea.com. He prints pt with
enlarged negs from 35mm. I have had the opportunity to go through his
master prints and larger 20x24" prints and they are all that one could want.
To your question, I have a Nikon 4000ED and it is excellent. The latest
Nikon scanning software is very good, all you'll likely need. The Digital
Ice feature is handy to remove dust spots, but does not work with silver b&w
film (only with slides other than Kodachrome and with C41 negs). However,
what I and my friends are running up against is that the scanned neg is not
as sharp and clear as the image from a good digital SLR camera with the best
glass (e.g., Canon 1dMk2).
