The problem is, in my opinion, is that there is still a sizable hole in 
the graphics capability of Linux. For now that hole can be filled by 
using windows programs and crossover or wine. CrossOver is a snap to 
use, wine is not as well tuned.

Re your question about converting Nikon raws I can't help there since I 
don't use Nikon products other than a 4000ED scanner at the moment AND 
I no longer use Linux for graphics. Your original question was, I 
think, is it possible to use Linux for .... The short answer is yes but 
not without some experimentation.

Downloading raw images shouldn't be a problem since the camera or card 
reader would be recognized as a peripheral storage device when plugged 
into a usb port.
