You don't need to purge, but it will take many prints before you are
using a new inkset, around 80 8x10's or so.  You can suck out a lot of
old ink through the cartridge holes with a syringe that will shorten the
time.  I just did that as I changed to MIS VM from Piezo inks. Worked great.

The original MIS inks are very warm, and the VM inks can be warm or very
cold. Not better prints, but you now would have a choice from brown to
blue tones. The neutral is quite nice.

THe VM black is darker than the standard black, so yes the prints would
be better.
