Dean- After years of scanning with 1200 dpi flat-beds, then a Polaroid 4x5 film scanner, then a Scitex flatbed, I got tired of always feeling like the shadows were blocking up (or the highlights in the case of negatives), and broke down and bought a used Howtek 4500. I'm very happy with it, am learning to mount the film without too much trouble, and side by side comparisons show that yes, I was losing _alot_ of detail below about 80%. There are a couple of Howteks now on Ebay; one shows up about once or twice a month, others as well. You want it all, how much are you willing to spend to get it? I'm shooting fine grain 100 & 400 ASA, Leica optics, materials ranging from high contrast to those of long tonal scale! Alas! I wan't it all! Thanks. Dean Ritz dritz@...
