Request for scanner suggestions

2001-11-03 by dritz@montana.com

Hi there, I'm new to this group.

I'm currently using a 3year old Minolta Dimage Scan Dual (2700dpi)
borrowed from a friend... a tool for learning about the process
before making the big-$$ plunge into equipment.

The B&W scans on this old-timer leave much to be desired, especially
in capturing details from areas of high negative density.

Without provoking a religious war, any recommendations for a scanner
for unmounted 35mm B&W negatives? I'm shooting fine grain 100 & 400
ASA, Leica optics, materials ranging from high contrast to those of
long tonal scale! Alas! I wan't it all!

Also, any recommended literature on this subject to augment the
acquisition of knowledge through experience?

Thanks.

Dean-
After years of scanning with 1200 dpi flat-beds, then a Polaroid 4x5 film
scanner, then a Scitex flatbed, I got tired of always feeling like the
shadows were blocking up (or the highlights in the case of negatives), and
broke down and bought a used Howtek 4500. I'm very happy with it, am
learning to mount the film without too much trouble, and side by side
comparisons show that yes, I was losing _alot_ of detail below about 80%.

There are a couple of Howteks now on Ebay; one shows up about once or twice
a month, others as well.

You want it all, how much are you willing to spend to get it?
