Anthony, I have been intrigued by this dialog, following each message. In general I have always favored CRTs as you do. However, the new Sony SDM-S204/B 20" LCD (I think you may have mentioned this one) is looking pretty favorable. And, though not a manufacturer--per se, they apparently do build and/or remanufacture their own monitors--I just found an online reseller today (monitorsdirect.com) that has a "No Dead Pixel" policy. They aren't the cheapest price around, but the dead pixel policy is, I suppose, worth something. And, if you're not satisfied, for any reason, for up to 30 days they provide a full refund, including one-way worth of shipping. They even supply free software for testing the monitor.
