RE: [Digital BW] matboard - buffered vs unbuffered with UT2

2004-11-13 by Paul Roark

I favor buffered mat board and printing paper for prints you want to last.
The best fade test results I have are on buffered paper, although the
surface may be acidic.

EEM is acidic and also does very well on fade tests. However, Wilhelm
initially noted that the original EAM would yellow in 30 years. Now he
rates EEM at about 100 years, in rather perfect storage conditions.

In an open display, a significant part of the paper's acids will escape into
the air. In an enclosed space like a frame, however, that acid has only the
mat boards or the paper as a place to end up. In a conservation article
I've seen reports of acidic damage to old books that are encapsulated being
up to 10 times as bad as when they were open to the air. With a framed,
acidic print, a buffered mat board just might absorb those migrating acids,
prolonging the life of the paper.

Subject: [Digital BW] matboard - buffered vs unbuffered with UT2

All,
I'm trying to figure out whether printing with the UT2 inks needs
buffered or unbuffered mat board. All the references to unbuffered mat
board is regarding color prints. Some articles reference dye-based
inkjet prints. I have no clue on pigment based ones.

any suggestions?
