Paul,

I would first call Compas Micro, the authorized Epson parts source in Portland to find out 
the price of these original pads. I have found their prices extremely reasonable. The 
number is 1-503-408-8725. 

Very soon I am going to have to replace these myself and if the price seems a bit high I 
will do as you suggested by using the sanitary pads with the plastic covers removed. I'll 
bet there are other stiffer cotton pads out there made for something, but I can't think of 
where one might find them.
