7500 waste pads

7500 waste pads

2004-11-27 by Paul Roark

It's time to change my waste pads. I found the instructions and procedure
for re-setting the counter in the Wide Format forum, but I have not found
whether people are able to buy the original Epson pads at a reasonable price
or whether they are using "sanitary pads" or other materials. (I have not
yet taken the printer apart to look at what I'm facing.) With the sanitary
pads or diapers, it seems to me the water-proof sides to them will need to
be taken off, in which case they become a bit of a mess.

What do large format printer folks generally use for this?

Thanks.

Paul

Paul,

I would first call Compas Micro, the authorized Epson parts source in Portland to find out
the price of these original pads. I have found their prices extremely reasonable. The
number is 1-503-408-8725.

Very soon I am going to have to replace these myself and if the price seems a bit high I
will do as you suggested by using the sanitary pads with the plastic covers removed. I'll
bet there are other stiffer cotton pads out there made for something, but I can't think of
where one might find them.

I've used everything from a half used toilet paper roll to cotton
balls to a bunch of paper towels crammed in. I even tried cleaning and
drying the original pads, ridiculous mess and waste of time.
Whatever works.

Re: [Digital BW] 7500 waste pads

2004-11-27 by Mark MacKenzie

I have had the same problem with my Epson 9000 and went through all that
has been suggested and did not really like the process or the results.
However, I recently had an art conservation project in my lab which
reminded me that I had a supply of "cotton linters" from an
upholsterer's supply house. You buy this in bags by the foot or yard
and it is cheap. It is the basic clean cotton linters produced to feed
all aspects of the cotton base use industry. It usually comes in about
a 4 " think bat or roll (that is why it is sold by the yd or ft). Cut
or pull off a piece to fit your waste box. I found that it worked
really well (still is). I think I put a folded paper towell on top for
some reason or other.

This is a cheap product and I don't think that it cost me more than a
buck. If any one is wanting to try this, send me an email off list with
about how much you need (cubic wise) ie. waste box dimensions and I will
send it to them as long as it is cheap mailing ( I am not a paying
business but a private user at the moment).

Any rate, my two cents.

Paul,one more bit:

When you get it all back together again, set up a waste bypass
bottle so you don't ever have to do it again. I have a square
plastic bottle (an old Kodak stop bath bottle) velcro'd to the right
side of the printer's base, under the protruding section. a small
hole in the sheet metal allows you to feed the drain tubes into the
bottle, and you're done.

Paul:
Rather than mess around with pads, I would use the waste by-pass set
up. It would take about the same amount of time to install and in
the end is much easier to manage. On the 9000 it is a real snap. I
helped a friend with a 7000 set one up. You have to scout around a
bit to find the best way to snake the lines down to a bottle. I
bought 1/8" plastic tubing and press fitted the two small white
tubes into it as far as I could (about 1/4"). yes, you need two
lengths.

Be careful not to put the tubing too far into the bottle, so it
doesn't syphon the ink from the cart!

Last I remember, in the files section of the Wide Format group there
was a pretty detailed explanation.
