7500 with UT-FSN
2004-11-27 by Paul Roark
I loaded the new UT-FSN into my 7500 last night (thus the waste pad issue), and it seems to be working extremely well - printing well on both matte and glossy papers with the Eboni matte black ink installed. In short, this is a B&W solution that allows all paper types without changing the black ink. The ink order was K = Eboni, C = FSN-C, M = FSN-C, LC = FSN-M, LM = FSN-M, Y = FSN-Y. With the Epson driver, Watercolor paper type, Color Controls checked, gamma 1.8, and a grayscale file, EEM prints with a good ramp and a 50% density of 0.72 or Lab L = 50.9. The shadows are compressed, but that is also how my calibrated monitor shows them - which I don't like. With slider contrast and brightness controls the shadows can be opened up to what I prefer. Of course, a RIP or curves could do even a better job. Epson Premium Semimatte also prints well with this ink setup. Using the curve that I made and posted for the 2000P and the UT-FS inksets, an RGB file prints the blacks with the dual dark grays. With the Epson driver I withhold the matte black by turning off the Y ink. The dmax is 2.1 initially and 2.23 after spraying with PremierArt Print Shield. The highlights are very smooth. At 75 - 80% there is some roughness that might be noticed in small prints, but in large display prints I doubt anyone is ever going to notice it. Also, this is a first effort, so there may be ways to reduce this. The results are so good I'm placing an order for a roll of Semimatte.
