sorry for the delay in responding; wasn't checking my email.
 
thanks for the advice.  it looks like I was able to figure the problem out.  my guess is it had a lot to do w/ photoshop CS's shadow/highlight tool: If you tweak it too much, you end up w/ splotchy looking grays.
 
thanks again.  the inks are great!
 
FYI: the EEM Neutral curve tends to print a little warm on inkjet art's duo brite matte.  not displeasing at all, though.  photorag neutral curve on the same paper tends to print closer to neutral, but a little dark.

I can't tell what might be causing the problem.  The addition of a CIS
should not have had any effect.  So, if the inks and printer looked good
before, but the problem showed up with the CIS, the first thing I'd do is
re-check that the inks are in the right positions.

I'm not familiar with the paper you're using.  So, the curve may not be a
good fit for the paper.  You might try some of the other curves.

In general, printing without curves is a more failsafe procedure.  If the
print is too dark then, even with appropriate slider controls, that might be
a sign that it's not just a bad curve.

Of course, be sure that the file has no residual color information in it
before curves are applied and that there is no embedded profile.

That is possible.  Printing a 21-step test file on a paper for which there
are slider control recommendations and curves is a better way to check out
the system than using a file that may be the source of the problem.  I have
test files posted on my web Information page.  You might also want to check
out the Readme file there for UT7.  See the index at

I think getting good results with the sliders from a grayscale file is the
first step.  After you're comfortable with that and the images look good,
curves would be the next and more complicated step.  Frankly, I use the
sliders approach a lot -- easy works for me.
