Sorry that this may be slightly OT, since it seems to refer to film, but many of us still shoot film and then scan it, so: It seems like it would be a good idea to print out the page from the TSA site, complete with their letterhead, as a start. They recommend NOT carrying film in lead-lined bags, since they say that this will cause hand-inspection. Either they ramp up the machine so that they can see through the bag, or they are very slack, since I've taken scores of flights with film in those bags passing through the X-ray machines, and have almost never been asked to open my bag. Though I don't generally take anything faster than 400 ISO film, and I've had some rolls in bags that have passed through machines at least 8 times with no damage. The bags are also useful for insulating film from heat if you're going to a very warm climate. The other issue, as they point out, is that if you are going to another country, they are not at all likely to have a policy that allows you to request hand-inspection of carry-on baggage. I've been in a number of situations where it was made very clear to me that I either put the bag through the machine or I didn't get on the plane.
