Is there a reasonably easy way to create your own tone curves for a given ink/paper combination for use with QTR? I'm using a 2200 on a WinXP platform. If so, can you provide me with a link on how to do it? Thanks, Lou --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Steve Kale <stevekale@b...> wrote: > Yes if you reprofile your printer

Do somebody knows if HP produces large format ink-jet printers (A3+ or A2+) that supports the 3-gray B/W printing (like the new 8450) ? Thank you Enrico

I am sorry but I use a Mac. With a Mac it is easy. I think Daniel Staver has been working on porting this aspect of QTR to PC.

I'd like to add a tutorial and better error checking before releasing the program though. I hope to make the final version during the holidays. -- Daniel Staver http://daniel.staver.no

Hopefully this is not too terribly offlist ... but since many of us are photographers ... one of you may have the information. The FAA has a regulation that let's photographers carry on one extra bag. I had the information and like a bone-head., lost it. The article where I read the info said i t was good to be able to quote the regulation (ie: number, paragraph, etc.) I'm getting ready for a trip. Any help out there? Thanks! I didn't know that. Here is the link to the TSA website indicating an extra bag. http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editorial/editorial_1248.xml Might come in handy, but it sounds like a lot of red tape, i.e., the carrier must allow it also. I'd forget about a hand check of film. Also quoting the FAA reg to the ticket clerk might be like explaining the law to a traffic cop...a loooonnng wait may ensue.

Joe; It is a fairly recent change in regulations which means that virtually everyone you come in contact with at the airport will have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about, . . . . consequently, they will probably shoot you for being a terrorist, or at the very least drop you off twenty miles from the airport and let you hitch-hike to your destination. I do not remember the regulation number (or if there is one), however if you take a look at Photopro http://www.photopro.net/ archives or at the ASMP site http://www.asmp.org/ (they were the ones who fought for this), you will surely come up with more info. good luck, and have patience all the best Paul Aparycki Hopefully this is not too terribly offlist ... but since many of us are photographers ... one of you may have the information. Paul: Thanks for your counsel. Here's as ASMP link dealing with the issue. http://www.asmp.org/tips/tsa.php Also in that section are guidelines on leaving baggage with photo equipment locked. Apparently, they (ASMP) have gone to the mat with TSA to help photographers. Thanks for the tip. Kindest regards, Joe PS: Thanks to the list for permitting this investigation. And here's the one on film: <http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editorial/editorial_1035.xml> but I try to have B&H send it to me where I'm going and have it processed before getting back on a plane. Incidentally, the best carry-on bag I've found, which is also the best bag I've found to use in a car or truck, is this one: <http://www.KinesisGear.com/s/S360.html> -- Sam

Not true. Insist on the hand inspection of film. Tell them you are a pro (helps if you have a business card or member affiliation card) and if the film is an ISO 800 or less (they say it will not hurt film slower then that - BS!) tell them you rate it higher. They will "swab" each roll, out of it's plastic container, so be ready for that and it will speed things up. They just are looking for explosives. You have rights too. Sorry that this may be slightly OT, since it seems to refer to film, but many of us still shoot film and then scan it, so: It seems like it would be a good idea to print out the page from the TSA site, complete with their letterhead, as a start. They recommend NOT carrying film in lead-lined bags, since they say that this will cause hand-inspection. Either they ramp up the machine so that they can see through the bag, or they are very slack, since I've taken scores of flights with film in those bags passing through the X-ray machines, and have almost never been asked to open my bag. Though I don't generally take anything faster than 400 ISO film, and I've had some rolls in bags that have passed through machines at least 8 times with no damage. The bags are also useful for insulating film from heat if you're going to a very warm climate. The other issue, as they point out, is that if you are going to another country, they are not at all likely to have a policy that allows you to request hand-inspection of carry-on baggage. I've been in a number of situations where it was made very clear to me that I either put the bag through the machine or I didn't get on the plane.

There is no mechanism whereby an inspector can "ramp up" the power of the x-ray machine. That's a myth that is overdue to be debunked. The machines operate at a fixed (low)level of x-ray output. The only thing an operator can do is pause the belt so that the image stays on the screen for a more detailed visual examination. -- Stephen Petegorsky <petegorsky@...> wrote: Sorry that this may be slightly OT, since it seems to refer to film, but many of us still shoot film and then scan it, so: It seems like it would be a good idea to print out the page from the TSA site, complete with their letterhead, as a start. It's variable, actually. I'll let you go up the chain of supervisors (g).
Some screeners are accomodating, others are your basic disgruntled employee.
The other day I asked for a hand inspection. The guy (he even looked a
little like Barney Fife) opened my backpack case and asked what the film
holders were...once he understood they held film, he wanted to pull out all
the dark slides, and allowed that the inspection might take enough time that
I'd miss my plane. I said send it through. It was all TriX and Tmax 100.
Sheet film is supposed to be more susceptible to damage, but the density was
the same as normal. Anyone concerned might check with FedEx or DHL and see
if they are still not x-raying. It's easy enough to send the film to your
destination and then back to yourself or your lab. I like digital more all
the time.
