Scott, Fill the new clear "easy refill" types through the top hole. Just pull the plug, fill, and reset the chip. I'm anti-bottom fill. The filter in the carts is supposed to protect the head from any junk that is in the ink. If you bottom fill cartridges any excessively large particles are on the wrong side of the filter and end up in the head. Ultimately, bottom filling will probably lead to a clogged screen in the head and the need to replace the head -- an expensive repair. That said, bottom filling has been about the only way to fill a number of types of carts. That is one reason these new carts are such an important development.
