MIS EZN and Epson Premium Luster

MIS EZN and Epson Premium Luster

2004-12-23 by scott_now_coming

I just want to report my opinion on this combination:

EPSON C86 (Settings: Gamma 1.8; Contrast -14; Brightness +3; High
speed-off)
MIS EZN Carts.w/PK
EPSON Premium Luster Photo Paper
NIKON D-70 NEF File
QImage: Prtr ICC-off; Interp Max/ Max/Pyramid / 5 (default)

WOW! I just printed a few portraits and they look awesome.

I think this is a close to a fiber-base "wet" print as you can get.
I used to print on glossy fiberbase in the darkroom.

The above combo gives me what I've been looking for in a "digital"
print.

Even a "hardcore" photographer wouldn't be able to tell it's an
inkjet, digital print from normal viewing distance.

Even if you "put your nose on it", I think you'd be hard-pressed
totell it's digital. A knowlegable photographer may detect a SLIGHT
bit of over-sharpening, but not at normal (18 inches or so) view
distance.

Everything I've been looking for in a "digital darkroom", er....
ah... except that 44" wide printer. I'm working on that!

I'm happy to hear the system is working for you. With the easy-refill
carts, bulk ink, and a chip resetter, the cost per print is just a few
pennies more than the paper cost. Have you tried the Costco Kirkland
Signature Pro Glossy Photo Paper to get that down to $0.15 per print?

For your next step to the huge print sizes, look for a used 9500 (or 7500,
7000, or 9000). I could actually be quite happy with just a C86 and my
7500.

Paul,

I forgot to ask:

Is the prefered method of re-filling the new (clear) carts, through
the bottom?

RE: [Digital BW] MIS EZN and Epson Premium Luster

2004-12-25 by Paul Roark

Scott,

Fill the new clear "easy refill" types through the top hole. Just pull the
plug, fill, and reset the chip.

I'm anti-bottom fill. The filter in the carts is supposed to protect the
head from any junk that is in the ink. If you bottom fill cartridges any
excessively large particles are on the wrong side of the filter and end up
in the head. Ultimately, bottom filling will probably lead to a clogged
screen in the head and the need to replace the head -- an expensive repair.
That said, bottom filling has been about the only way to fill a number of
types of carts. That is one reason these new carts are such an important
development.

Scott,

The older large format printers -- 7000, 7500, 9000, & 9500 -- do not have
chips. Keep an eye on Ebay. It's possible the 7500 has a slightly better
dmax than the 7000, but I'm not totally sure of that.
