I don't think it's necessary to start with the OEM inks, but doing so makes sure that the printer is functioning properly before you install the MIS inks. If for some reason the printer isn't working properly right out of the box, you can take it back/send it in for adjustment without any worries about having put the "wrong" ink in it. I installed the OEM inks in my C84 before installing the MIS EZ inks. The ink path seems to be very short, so those color inks get purged pretty quickly after you do the switch. I had beautiful monochrome prints within a page or two after installing the EZ inks. I've tried several papers, but have settled on Epson Enhanced Matte as the best looking paper that's reasonably affordable. (I make a lot of prints to give away as Christmas presents - did about 740 8x8 prints this year - so cost is a factor. If I only did the occasional print for display I would explore the more expensive offerings, but I can't afford $1+/page at my volumes.)
