C86 maiden voyage

C86 maiden voyage

2004-12-27 by Steve

What is the procedure for the initial startup of the c86?

Have I read correctly that it is necessary to install the oem inks
prior to the installation of the mis ink system?

Additonally, what papers should I be looking at with the EZ-N inks?

Any Assistance will be grealy appreciated.

According to MIS you should put the OEM inks in first to make sure the
printer's in working condition before putting in MIS inks.

Check Paul's webpages for papers.. Start with the cheap EEM papers.

I don't think it's necessary to start with the OEM inks, but doing so
makes sure that the printer is functioning properly before you install
the MIS inks. If for some reason the printer isn't working properly
right out of the box, you can take it back/send it in for adjustment
without any worries about having put the "wrong" ink in it.

I installed the OEM inks in my C84 before installing the MIS EZ inks.
The ink path seems to be very short, so those color inks get purged
pretty quickly after you do the switch. I had beautiful monochrome
prints within a page or two after installing the EZ inks.

I've tried several papers, but have settled on Epson Enhanced Matte as
the best looking paper that's reasonably affordable. (I make a lot of
prints to give away as Christmas presents - did about 740 8x8 prints
this year - so cost is a factor. If I only did the occasional print for
display I would explore the more expensive offerings, but I can't afford
$1+/page at my volumes.)

Cheers,
Kip

Steve,

I didn't install the Epson ink.

I installed the MIS in a "virgin" C86.

If you do this, you may have to run a few cleanings before you get a
good print.

If you do 3 cleanings in a row, make a print or 2 before running
another cleaning cycle.

I used quite a bit of the "black" in before I had "trouble free"
printing, but it was WELL worth it.

Also, I had to turn off "High Speed Printing".

I used Paul Roark's suggested starting point and the made one
adjustment since.

Epson Premium Luster Photo Paper looks awesome (I'm a portrait
photographer).

I'm going with the re-fillabe carts next. If you like the results,
I'm sure you'll go with re-fillabe carts to.

Good luck and tell us what you think.

Scott

Scott:

Thank you very much for the info. I am new to the digital domain. I have a canon g5; canon i 960 for color prints, and the c86 for b&w.

I am still getting the hang of the g5, and am looking forward to getting into b&w. That was always my first love.

Years ago I had a couple of nikon F's and bought tri x in 250 ft rolls, did my own processing, etc.

The prospect of all of this being done without a darkroom is awesome.

One other quick question, not to ramble too much here, but I do not have photoshop.

I have an older computer that upgrading to xp isn't really a viable option.

I do have elements 2.0 and am considering picture window pro, since one does layers, and the other does curves.

Would that make sense (given the current budget), to at least begin learning the basics of digital editing etc. Also, am curious about the conversion to b&w.

Sorry to rant and ramble here. Any input you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Steve,

I'm a terrible one to ask about curves. I never have any luck when
using "curves" for adjustments. I have better luck using "levels".

I REALLY need to learn how to use "curves", as I know that will come
in handy.

I don't know what "Picture Pro" is. I was at CompUSA today and
happened to look for it while I was there, and didn't see it.

I'm sure others here will be able to help you with those two
questions.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Scott/Steve, if I may, my web site has an in-depth explanation of
Photoshop Curves. Go to http://www.zuberphotographics.com/, click on
Quick Picks and then click on Curves. Once I started using Curves, I
find myself using it more often than Levels. However, the Levels
histogram is hard to beat.

Awesome, Thomas!

That's going to come in very handy.

I skimmed through it and then bookmarked it. I'll return when I have
more time to open PS and experiment.

Very helpful.

Thank you,

Scott

Thanks Scott. It may not be obvious, but there are six sections on
Curves. A general discussion, anchor points, making adjustments,
using the eyedroppers, color correction and a self administered test
to help with comprehension.
